Major Concepts of Server and Storage

The biggest difference between server and storage is that the server is a hardware device or a program that provides services to the client machines in the network based on their requests while the storage is part of the computer device that stores data for long-term access.

A server offers different services to multiple clients. They store and manage data, have resources shared, perform calculations and much more. There are powerful servers in data centres for efficient and reliable communication. Storage, however, refers to secondary memory that permanently stores data. This allows the processor or the CPU to transfer its data to the memory (RAM) for access to data in the short term.

What is a server?

A server is a software or hardware device that provides services to other devices on the network. The other devices are also known as clients or hosts. Clients obtain services from the server. A single server can simultaneously provide services to multiple clients. The server and client can be on the same device or the server can be a separate physical device. In addition, there can be multiple servers on one machine that serve different clients. When the server receives a request, it replies back to the client with the requested service.

server

There are different types of servers, such as file servers, database servers, mail servers, and application servers. The file servers deliver files to the client computers. The web servers offer web pages. Database servers run Database Management Systems (DBMS) to create and manage a database. E-mail servers send and receive e-mails using the standard e-mail protocol. Application servers offer facilities for creating web applications and a server environment to spend time. These are some common examples of servers.

What is storage?

In a computer, the data can be stored in memory or storage. Memory is the component that stores data for a short period. Memory refers to the Working Memory (RAM). It is a volatile memory, so the data is stored temporarily. The data is deleted when the device loses power.

Storage refers to a component in the computer that can be used to open data for a long time. The hard drive and Solid State Drive (SSD) are storage components. The data in the storage is permanent and it is a non-volatile memory. Switching off the device does not affect the stored data. Although the user shuts down the computer several times, the data remains as it is. That is why storage offers long-term access to data.

Difference between server and storage

Definition

A server is a program or hardware device that provides services to other devices on the network. Storage is a physical device on a computer that can permanently store data.

Functionality

A server provides data, allows sharing of resources and offers other services to the client computers in the network. They also offer the ability to manage databases, deliver files and web pages, etc. depending on the type. On the other hand, storage is used to store and access data, files, and applications. That is why functionality is a big difference between servers and storage.

Conclusion

The difference between server and storage is that the server is a hardware device or a program that provides services to the client machines in the network based on their requests, while the storage is part of the computer device that stores data for long-term access.
