As someone who has spent over a decade in the web industry, we would like to share our insights and opinions on the influence of AI on the web industry.
In web design and development two key parties are typically involved: the website designer and the website owner (or business owner). In this blog, I aim to explain how AI is impacting both web professionals and website owners or managers.
When we examine the roles of web design and development, it’s important to recognize that these are distinct fields. We’ve elaborated on this distinction in a previous blog post regarding the differences between website design and development.
Reflecting on my early career as a web designer, the contrast with today’s web designers is striking. Many of you who have been in the industry for a while can likely relate when you see the younger generation of designers at work.
They operate in ways that are more efficient and resourceful than we did. This shift can largely be attributed to the vast array of resources and tools available today.
In the past, we had limited resources and fewer tools at our disposal. We had to rely primarily on our creativity, manual skills, and a few basic tools. Today, however, designers have access to an abundance of tools and resources.
AI plays a key role in enhancing the design process. For example, AI can generate component ideas, assist in creating design elements, and even offer design suggestions.
This significantly boosts efficiency, helping designers complete tasks more quickly and effectively. Some AI tools are capable of generating entire designs, allowing designers to simply make adjustments.
While AI brings many advantages, there are also potential drawbacks. If designers rely too heavily on AI-generated designs, they may lose their creative edge. Creativity is the core essence of web design, and excessive dependence on AI could stifle a designer's innovative thinking.
• AI provides fresh ideas and concepts that may surpass human imagination.
• AI assists in creating design components efficiently.
• AI offers various design options, including sections and components.
• AI helps designers to complete projects faster, saving time and effort.
• AI could reduce the value of web design and the designer's role.
• Over Reliance on AI may stifle creativity and logical design thinking.
• AI could potentially replace basic design jobs.
• Designers may fail to develop essential skills if they depend too much on AI.
Let’s consider a real-world example to see how AI impacts designers. A few years ago, we employed a graphic designer to create social media posts and website graphics. However, this year, I decided to stop paying for those services since I can now generate designs using AI tools.
These AI platforms provide a vast range of templates and designs at no cost, and in many cases, the designs are more varied and sophisticated than what I could get from a designer. As a result, the designer lost their job.
This case highlights a reality that all designers must adapt to: AI is reshaping the design industry, and those who don’t adjust may find themselves out of work.
Now, let's explore the impact of AI on web developers. As we did for designers, we'll break it down into positive and negative aspects:
AI helps structure code and databases.
AI can generate code for website features and functions.
AI enables faster development cycles, improving code quality and efficiency.
AI could reduce the developer’s logical problem-solving growth.
The value of web development jobs might diminish.
Relying on AI-generated code could introduce security risks.
For a deeper exploration of the impact on web developers, AI tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini can provide further insights.
Finally, let’s discuss how AI can benefit website owners or web managers. Here are some of the key advantages:
Content is vital for any website. Even the best-designed and developed websites are incomplete without it. AI can now generate high-quality content quickly, saving website owners time and effort.
Whether for service pages, product descriptions, blogs, or other types of content, AI can handle the creation process. Additionally, AI can help refine rough drafts of content to improve quality.
If you are planning to develop a website, it’s important to understand how it works, the advantages and disadvantages, its components, costs, technologies, and more.
Rather than consulting with a web expert, website owners can now use AI tools to easily get explanations and insights about these aspects.
AI tools can monitor various aspects of a website, such as performance speed, security, SEO status, and more.
With AI, website owners can independently assess their site’s health and performance, saving time and resources that would otherwise be spent on technical support.
AI is undoubtedly reshaping the web industry, impacting both designers, developers, and website owners in various ways.
While AI enhances efficiency and opens new possibilities, it also comes with potential drawbacks, including the loss of creativity, job displacement, and security concerns.
The key for all professionals in the web industry is to adapt, learn to leverage AI effectively, and continue developing the skills that will keep them competitive in an evolving landscape.
